USAF Materiel Systems Group Data Depot Project

The Client
Managed in Dayton, Ohio, this systems group is the primary software development group responsible for developing and maintaining IT systems that support logistics business processes serving the Air Force Materiel Command. The group must meet the direct and indirect logistic needs for over 350,000 military members worldwide.

The Challenge
The Data Depot has two initiatives: First, the operational initiative which is to create a single, consolidated data model for a distributed database for the depot maintenance systems as they are technically refreshed. Second, the informational initiative which is to create a data warehouse for decision support for logistics personnel.

Solution and Results
Haverstick's role in this team of contractors and government personnel is to support the data acquisition function. In this capacity, Haverstick has:

  • Evaluated tools and methodologies for mapping and loading data originating in the legacy system
  • Developed processes to ensure the orderly and systematic migration of master data loads and interface data feeds from development to test and production
  • Developed the full life cycle process for the modules that load the database and manage the interfaces between the Data Depot and other systems

Haverstick Consulting has accepted the additional responsibility of designing the interfaces of new systems currently being added into the Data Depot due to their expertise and experience gained in the performance of their tasking.

As part of the operational team, Haverstick Consulting developed a unified methodology using standard software engineering processes to ensure the integrity of the data and validity of the modules throughout their life cycle, including configuration management and requirements traceability.

As part of the informational team, Haverstick Consulting outlined a streamlined architecture that became the development architecture. They are moving the data loading modules that were implemented using multiple methodologies to a single methodology that facilitates rapid development with reusable submodules.
